Few names carry the same recognition in Doha’s hospitality landscape as Hilton Doha. Over the years, the property has established a distinctive presence in the city, welcoming international travelers, business guests and local residents while evolving alongside Doha itself. Today, as the city continues to strengthen its position as a global destination for tourism, business and lifestyle, Hilton Doha is entering another defining chapter.
I recently sat down with Wael Maatouk, Area General Manager of Hilton Doha West Bay, to discuss what that next chapter means for one of the city’s established hospitality names. Our conversation quickly moved beyond the renovation itself to a broader question: how does a landmark property evolve with the times while preserving the identity and standards that have shaped its reputation?
Maatouk brings considerable perspective to that question. His career has taken him from Food & Beverage into senior leadership across Montreal, Riyadh, Dubai and Doha, exposing him to different markets, cultures and generations of visitors. That experience has given him an informed view of where hospitality is heading and what today’s guests increasingly expect from an upscale hotel.
In our conversation for LLQ Lifestyle, we explore the transformation of Hilton Doha, the changing definition of comfort, the rise of experiential travel, the importance of diverse hospitality teams and the opportunities ahead for Doha’s rapidly evolving hospitality scene.

LLQ Lifestyle: You have built an impressive career in the hospitality industry and have taken on leadership roles across different markets. Looking back, what have been the defining moments that shaped you into the leader you are today?
Wael Maatouk: “My career has been shaped by the opportunity to work across different markets, cultures, brands and business environments. Each chapter has taught me something different about leadership, particularly the importance of adaptability, resilience and staying close to the operation.
Coming from a Food & Beverage background gave me a strong operational foundation and a deep understanding of the guest experience. Over the years, moving into broader leadership responsibilities taught me to look beyond individual departments and understand the hotel as an integrated business, where people, commercial performance, guest experience and brand positioning all need to work together.
Leading in different markets, including Montreal, Riyadh, Dubai and Doha, has also reinforced the importance of cultural intelligence. There is no universal leadership formula. The ability to understand the market, listen to people and adapt while remaining consistent in your values is what ultimately makes leadership effective.”
LLQ Lifestyle: As Area General Manager, what do you enjoy most about leading a diverse team in one of Doha’s most dynamic hospitality environments?
Wael Maatouk: “The diversity of our people is one of our greatest strengths. Hospitality brings together individuals from different cultures, backgrounds and experiences, and when that diversity is managed effectively, it creates a very powerful organization.
What I enjoy most is creating alignment, bringing different teams and perspectives together around a common purpose and ensuring everyone understands the role they play in our overall success.
Doha is also an exciting market. The pace of development, the increasing sophistication of the tourists and Qatar’s growing position on the global tourism map create an environment where we must continuously evolve.
As a leader, I find that challenge extremely motivating. It is about building an organization that is commercially strong, operationally disciplined and, above all, capable of delivering an exceptional experience consistently.”
LLQ Lifestyle: Every leader has a unique approach to building and motivating a team. How would you describe your leadership style, and what values do you believe are essential for creating a successful hospitality culture?
Wael Maatouk: “I would describe my leadership style as transparent, empowering and accountable.
I believe people perform at their best when they understand the direction of the business, have clarity around expectations and are trusted to take ownership. My role as a leader is not to have every answer, but to create the conditions in which the right answers can emerge from the team. The values I consider fundamental are integrity, respect, accountability and continuous improvement. In hospitality, culture is not something that sits separately from business performance; it directly influences it.
When you build a culture where people feel respected, empowered and accountable, you create stronger engagement, better service and ultimately a stronger business.”

LLQ Lifestyle: The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, especially in a destination as dynamic as Qatar. What changes are you seeing in guest expectations today, and how are you adapting to them?
Wael Maatouk: “Guest expectations have become significantly more sophisticated. Visitors are no longer simply evaluating a hotel based on its rooms, facilities or traditional service standards. They are evaluating the entire experience from the first digital interaction to the sense of place, personalization, dining, wellness and the memories they take away.
We are also seeing the expectations of younger generations, particularly Gen Z, influencing the wider hospitality landscape. They are highly connected, experience-driven and value authenticity, flexibility and meaningful experiences. They want brands to be relevant, engaging and genuine rather than simply transactional.
At the same time, we are seeing a greater convergence between business and leisure travel, with guests looking for properties that can cater to multiple needs within one experience.
For us, this means remaining highly responsive to changing consumer behavior while protecting the fundamentals of hospitality. Technology can enhance convenience and personalization, but it cannot replace genuine human connection.
Our focus is therefore on combining strong operational foundations with innovation, relevant experiences and a deeper understanding of our guests, including the expectations of the next generation of travelers. The future of hospitality will be about creating experiences that feel personal, authentic and worth remembering.”
LLQ Lifestyle: What does exceptional hospitality mean to you personally, and how do you ensure that this philosophy is reflected in the guest experience across your properties?
Wael Maatouk: “Exceptional hospitality is ultimately about relevance and connection. It is about understanding what matters to the guest and delivering it with authenticity and consistency.
At a leadership level, I believe the responsibility is to create the right culture, systems and empowerment for our teams to deliver that experience. You cannot create exceptional hospitality simply through procedures; you create it by developing people who genuinely care about the outcome.
Our role is also to ensure that operational excellence and commercial discipline support the guest experience rather than compete with it. The strongest hotels are those where service, brand, people and business performance move in the same direction.”

LLQ Lifestyle: Throughout your career, you have worked with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. What have these experiences taught you about leadership, communication and building strong teams?
Wael Maatouk: “It has taught me that diversity is not simply about representation; it is about perspective.
When you lead multicultural teams, you quickly learn that communication cannot be one-dimensional. You need to listen carefully, understand different perspectives and create an environment where people feel comfortable challenging ideas and contributing.
At the same time, a diverse organization needs a very clear common purpose. People may come from different backgrounds, but they need to understand what the organization stands for, what success looks like and what is expected of them.
For me, strong leadership is about creating that balance between individuality and alignment.”

LLQ Lifestyle: Beyond your professional responsibilities, what continues to inspire and motivate you in an industry you have dedicated so much of your career to?
Wael Maatouk: “The industry continues to evolve, and that keeps it interesting. Hospitality is one of the few businesses where people, culture, technology, real estate, food and beverage and tourism all intersect.
What motivates me most today is impact. I enjoy seeing the connection between a strategic decision and its outcome, whether that is developing talent, improving performance, strengthening a hotel’s market position or creating an experience that genuinely resonates with guests.
I am also passionate about developing future leaders. A successful leader should not simply deliver results today; they should leave behind a stronger team and organization for tomorrow.”
LLQ Lifestyle: Hilton Doha is currently undergoing an exciting renovation and transformation project. What is the vision behind this new chapter, and how will the project enhance the experience for both guests and the wider Doha community?
Wael Maatouk: “The transformation of Hilton Doha represents an important new chapter for the property and for our position within Doha’s hospitality landscape.
Our ambition is not simply to modernize the hotel. It is to redefine the experience and ensure that Hilton Doha remains relevant to the next generation of travelers while building on the property’s heritage and established reputation.
The transformation is being delivered through a phased approach, allowing us to continue welcoming guests while progressively enhancing key areas of the hotel. The program encompasses guest accommodation and executive facilities, meeting spaces and, in subsequent phases, important public, dining, leisure and wellness areas.
From a broader perspective, we see the hotel as part of the fabric of Doha. Our objective is to create a destination that serves not only international travelers but also the local community, corporate sector and residents who have been part of our story for many years.”

LLQ Lifestyle: Major transformations involve much more than redesigning physical spaces. How are you ensuring that the renovation of Hilton Doha preserves the property’s established identity while introducing a fresh, contemporary experience for a new generation of travelers?
Wael Maatouk: “That is one of the most important considerations behind the transformation.
A successful repositioning should respect the equity that has been built over time while having the courage to evolve. Hilton Doha has an established presence and strong recognition in the market, and we do not want to lose that connection.
At the same time, today’s traveler is different. Expectations around design, flexibility, dining, wellness, technology and social experiences have evolved considerably.
The answer is therefore not to choose between heritage and innovation, but to bring them together. We are retaining the strengths that define Hilton Doha while creating a more contemporary and experience-driven environment.
Most importantly, the transformation extends beyond the physical product. We are equally focused on our people, service culture and the way we engage with our guests. The ultimate objective is to ensure that the new Hilton Doha feels both familiar and new: recognizable to our loyal guests while exciting for a new generation.”
LLQ Lifestyle: What do you believe sets Doha apart as a global hospitality destination, and where do you see the city’s lifestyle sector heading in the coming years?
Wael Maatouk: “Doha has a unique proposition because it combines a sophisticated, rapidly developing destination with a strong sense of identity and culture.
Qatar has made significant investments in infrastructure, tourism, sports, culture and hospitality, and the results are increasingly visible. The country has successfully established itself as a destination capable of hosting the world while offering a distinct experience rooted in the region.
Looking ahead, I believe Doha’s hospitality sector will become increasingly experiential and diversified. The market will continue to move beyond traditional hospitality towards lifestyle, wellness, culinary experiences, entertainment and highly personalized stays.
The opportunity for the industry is to create experiences that are internationally relevant while remaining distinctly connected to Qatar.
For Hilton Doha, this is an exciting time. The transformation of the property is aligned with the evolution of the destination itself. Our ambition is to play an active role in that next chapter; not simply by responding to where Doha is going, but by contributing to the future of its hospitality landscape.”
Wael Matouk: The Expression of Hospitality Where Comfort Meets Tomorrow
Doha’s hospitality story is being shaped by leaders who understand that the city’s appeal lies in more than its impressive skyline. It is also found in the vision, creativity and commitment behind the properties that continue to redefine the guest experience. For Wael Maatouk, the future of hospitality is ultimately about bringing together people, place and purpose. His perspective reflects an industry moving beyond conventional definitions of hospitality towards experiences that are personal, culturally connected and constantly evolving.
As Hilton Doha enters its next chapter, the transformation offers an opportunity to build on its established identity while responding to the expectations of a new generation of travelers. Under Maatouk’s leadership, the focus remains on purposeful innovation, meaningful experiences and the belief that the strongest hospitality experiences begin with genuine connection.
Through such insightful conversations, LLQ Lifestyle continues to explore the leaders and ideas contributing to that evolution, with GM Wael Maatouk offering a compelling perspective on where Doha’s hospitality landscape is heading next.
