Let’s be honest, interior design can feel overwhelming. So many styles, colors, rules… where do you even start? After years of designing homes, I’ve learned that great design isn’t about perfection. It’s about finding the sweet spot between Function, Form, and Emotion. Here are my 5 favorite secrets that turn any space into something special:

1. Start with function, always.
Before choosing paint or picking sofas, ask yourself: What do I actually need from this space? Is it for relaxing, working, hosting guests? Design should make your life easier, not just prettier.
2. Don’t overcrowd, let it breathe.
A huge couch in a small room? Recipe for chaos. Choose furniture that fits the scale of your space. And don’t forget to leave some empty areas, it helps everything feel calmer and more open.

3. Play with form, have fun with it.
Balance doesn’t mean boring. You can mix shapes, play with lines, and even go a little asymmetrical, as long as the space still feels right. Your eyes will tell you when it works.
4. Use color like a pro.
The 60-30-10 rule is your best friend: 60% main color, 30% secondary, 10% pop. Want all neutrals? Mix textures, linen, wood, velvet, metal, to add depth and keep it interesting.

5. Add emotion, it’s the magic ingredient.
This is where the soul comes in. Soft lighting, your favorite candle, a photo that makes you smile… That’s what makes a house feel like home.
Design doesn’t have to be complicated. When you mix smart planning with personality, you’ll create something beautiful, and truly yours.
