Leadership in Focus: Wael Maatouk on People, Performance, and the Future of Hospitality

Set on the Corniche, with its own private stretch of beach in the heart of Doha’s diplomatic enclave, Hilton Doha doesn’t just welcome guests –it proudly reveals hospitality with excellence. Effortlessly balancing business and leisure, it has become a defining address where the city’s corporate pulse meets coastal indulgence. Here, days unfold against sweeping Gulf views, while nights transition into a vibrant mix of dining, entertainment, and refined social energy, making it one of Doha’s most complete lifestyle destinations.

Carrying forward the legacy of Hilton Doha’s hospitality excellence is Wael Maatouk, whose leadership continues to shape and elevate its enduring reputation.

A Canadian national with Lebanese roots, fluent in French, English, and Arabic, Maatouk began in Beirut’s food and beverage scene before advancing his academic path in Montreal. With an MBA in Leadership and Management and a strong foundation in hotel operations, he brings a balanced leadership style –strategic, intuitive, and deeply people-focused. Under his guidance, Hilton Doha continues to refine its legacy with quiet confidence.

Meeting Maatouk felt refreshingly unfiltered. There was an ease to the conversation, a sense of perspective shaped by experience rather than presentation. People, performance, and the future of hospitality take center stage as Wael Maatouk opens up about the principles behind his success. In conversation with LLQ Lifestyle, he reveals a leadership approach grounded not in grand gestures, but in the power of detail -those subtle, intentional hints that quietly elevate every guest experience at Hilton Doha into something truly memorable.

LLQ Lifestyle: You’ve spent more than two decades in hospitality. Looking back, which moments in your career would you say played the biggest role in shaping the leader you are today?

Wael Maatouk: “The most defining moments in my career have always come back to one truth – hospitality is about people. Opening hotels, leading diverse teams across cultures, and navigating both growth and challenging periods have all shaped how I see leadership today. For me, it has to be grounded in empathy, clarity, and purpose.

These experiences strengthened my responsibility as a host –creating environments where both guests and team members feel genuinely welcomed, valued, and motivated. It’s a philosophy that closely reflects Hilton’s founding vision of filling the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality, and it continues to guide the way I lead and make decisions every day.”

LLQ Lifestyle: As the General Manager of Hilton Doha, how do you ensure consistent service excellence and operational efficiency while keeping the guest experience fresh, relevant, and competitive in an upscale hospitality market?

Wael Maatouk: “At Hilton Doha, I’ve always believed that service excellence starts with culture. We focus on empowering our team members to truly live the “For the Stay” experience, bringing our service behaviors to life, delivering a genuine Blue Carpet Welcome, and making every guest feel seen, valued, and at home. For me, it’s about creating moments that stay with people long after they’ve checked out.

Consistency comes from strong training and clear standards that everyone understands and follows. But keeping the experience fresh is just as important. That’s why we continuously evolve what we offer, especially across our Food & Beverage and social spaces.

By blending Hilton’s global expertise with meaningful local relevance, we ensure our guests don’t just feel well hosted –they feel genuinely connected to the place and the experience.”

LLQ Lifestyle: The hospitality industry is evolving rapidly, especially with digital tools and data-driven decision-making. How have technology and analytics changed the way you approach guest experience and revenue performance?

Wael Maatouk: “Technology and analytics help us truly place the guest at the center of every decision we make. They give us deeper insight into guest preferences, allow us to personalize experiences, and help us anticipate needs throughout the entire stay journey. From revenue optimization to guest engagement, data enables us to make smarter, more proactive choices.

That said, I’ve always believed technology is only as powerful as the human touch behind it. For me, tech is not about replacing people, it’s about empowering our teams to deliver more warmth, more attention, and ultimately, more memorable moments for our guests.”

LLQ Lifestyle: Having led large, multicultural teams over the years, what is your approach to building strong leadership teams that stay motivated and deliver results in today’s demanding hospitality environment?

Wael Maatouk: “I believe strong leadership teams are built on trust, inclusion, and a shared sense of purpose. I focus on giving my leaders clear direction while empowering them to take ownership, collaborate effectively, and remain accountable in everything they do.

At Hilton, we see energized connections as essential not only between team members and guests, but also within leadership teams themselves. When I invest in development, recognize strong performance, and encourage open and honest communication, we naturally build teams that are motivated, resilient, and aligned in delivering exceptional results.”

LLQ Lifestyle: Your experience spans both hotel operations and managing extensive F&B portfolios. What key lessons from your time with MTY Group continue to influence your management style and daily decision-making?

Wael Maatouk: “My time with MTY Group really strengthened how I see hospitality operations. It taught me the importance of staying disciplined in execution while also thinking at scale and relying on data to guide performance.

Working across different F&B brands also showed me how important it is to strike the right balance between consistency and creativity. You have to protect standards and cost control, but at the same time stay flexible enough to respond quickly to changing market conditions.

These experiences still shape the way I lead today. They influence how I make decisions, how I measure performance, and ultimately how I think about delivering guest satisfaction across hotel operations.”

LLQ Lifestyle: The Middle East hospitality market is fast-paced and highly competitive. What do you see as the biggest opportunities for growth, and what challenges should hoteliers be prepared for over the next five years?

Wael Maatouk: “The Middle East is full of opportunity right now, driven by strong tourism growth, ongoing infrastructure development, and a guest base that is becoming more sophisticated and experience-driven. I see experiential travel, culinary innovation, and highly personalized service as the real areas of growth in the years ahead.

At the same time, the region is not without its challenges. Talent retention, rising operational costs, and the pressure to consistently deliver service excellence in a highly competitive market all require strong leadership. For me, it comes down to staying adaptable and never losing focus on people development, that’s what ultimately sustains long-term success.

LLQ Lifestyle: As an award-winning hotelier and mentor, what advice would you give to young hospitality professionals who aspire to move into senior leadership roles?

Wael Maatouk: “I often tell young professionals that leadership in hospitality starts with strong foundations and staying closely connected to the heart of what we do. For me, nothing replaces front-line experience, operational discipline, and a genuine care for both guests and colleagues. These are not optional; they are essential.

Over the years, I’ve learned that leadership is never defined by titles. It is defined by responsibility, consistency, and the ability to inspire others through your everyday actions. At Hilton, we believe great leaders don’t just manage teams, they create opportunities for them and act as trusted hosts in every sense, for both guests and colleagues.

My advice is simple: stay curious, remain humble, and always lead with purpose.”
