Moscow: A Growing Destination for Qatari Travelers

Spokesperson: Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee

Moscow has long been a city where history and modernity intersect, creating an unparalleled experience for travelers. For Qatari tourists, the Russian capital has become an increasingly attractive destination, offering a unique blend of cultural heritage, luxury shopping, and halal-friendly hospitality. According to Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, the number of Qatari visitors to Moscow has seen a growth, with approximately 9,000 travelers visiting Moscow in the first nine months of 2024, a remarkable increase compared to the entire year of 2023 and three times higher than the number recorded in 2019.

“Moscow’s iconic landmarks, such as the Red Square, Kremlin, and St. Basil’s Cathedral, offer a deep dive into Russia’s rich history, while world-class institutions like the Bolshoi Theatre and the Tretyakov Gallery provide unmatched cultural experiences,” Kozlov explains. The city also boasts over 2,000 hotels, including five-star accommodations designed to cater to travelers, ensuring that visitors from Qatar feel comfortable and well-served during their stay.

Moscow’s four-season attractions add another layer of appeal. Winter brings ice skating in Gorky Park, while the summer months are filled with festivals and outdoor events. Furthermore, the introduction of e-visas and ongoing discussions about a potential visa-free regime make traveling to Moscow easier than ever for Qatar tourists.

Strengthening Tourism Ties Between Moscow and Qatar

With the increase in Qatari visitors, opportunities for stronger tourism ties between the two regions continue to grow. Kozlov highlights several initiatives that can further facilitate travel.

“Currently, 14 weekly direct flights operate between Qatar and Moscow, and we see room for further expansion,” he says. Additionally, Moscow is fostering relationships between Russian and Qatari travel agencies to create customized packages tailored to Qatari travelers. Joint promotional campaigns, including tourism expos and roadshows, are also in the works to enhance Moscow’s visibility in Qatar.

Moscow’s commitment to making travel seamless and enjoyable for Qatari tourists is evident in the city’s investment in multilingual tourism services and cultural adaptability. “We are dedicated to ensuring top-tier hospitality standards for all our visitors,” Kozlov adds.

Cultural Exchange as a Gateway to Tourism Growth

Beyond infrastructure and accessibility, cultural exchange is another powerful tool for fostering tourism between Qatar and Moscow. In 2023 and 2024, Moscow hosted various cultural events highlighting Qatari heritage. These initiatives have played a crucial role in sparking interest in Russian audiences while inspiring Qatari travelers to explore Moscow. The launch of the Muslim-Friendly Guide to Moscow, featuring halal restaurants, mosques, and prayer spaces, also reinforces the city’s commitment to welcoming Middle Eastern tourists.

Tourism as an Economic Bridge

Tourism is not just a cultural exchange—it is also a vital economic driver for both Moscow and Qatar. “The hospitality industry makes a significant contribution to our economy, with hotel occupancy rates have climbed to 76% in 2024, thanks in part to a rise in international visitors, including those from Qatar.” Kozlov reveals.

Qatari travelers are making their mark in Moscow’s high-end retail sector, with many choosing to indulge in luxury shopping at renowned locations like GUM and TSUM. Meanwhile, Qatari business travelers frequently attend Moscow’s trade fairs and summits, strengthening commercial partnerships and opening doors for investment opportunities.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Kozlov envisions Moscow as a premier destination for Qatari travelers. “Our goal is to continue improving accessibility, hospitality, and engagement with Qatari tourists,” he says. Key areas of focus include visa-free travel, increasing direct flight connectivity, and expanding tailored travel experiences such as luxury tours, winter adventures, and business travel packages.

With its rich cultural offerings, expanding accessibility, and commitment to enhancing the traveler experience, Moscow is well on its way to becoming a top choice for Qatar tourists seeking a blend of tradition and modern luxury.
