As a professional makeup artist and beauty advisor, Nabilah Harron enjoys and always researching the latest seasonal beauty and makeup trends. With summer upon us, the heat and humidity need to be taken into consideration when choosing and applying makeup while still keeping up with the ever-changing beauty trends.
With many people travelling or planning their summer vacations, it can get very confusing which essential makeup products to pack in for your trip, while still staying on tend at the same time. To make it easier for you, I’ve scoured the internet, red carpet appearances, the latest fashion weeks, and viral online sensations to compile a list of my top 8 Makeup Trends you may want to consider trying out this summer.
- Subtle Base/ Pearl Skin
This summer there is an emphasis on healthy, effortless glowing skin. Full coverage, matte foundations are being replaced by lightweight formulas and textures that still provide light to medium coverage and gives a second- skin lit-from within effect. 2-in-1 concealer and foundations infused with skincare benefits will be a popular choice this summer. Used only where necessary to spot conceal blemishes and used under the eyes for brightening. - Refined Contouring
With foundation becoming more lightweight and ‘barely there’ this summer, precise contouring will bring shape and structure back to your face. Applied just under the cheekbones, temples, top of the forehead if necessary, sides of the nose and along the jawline. I prefer using a cooler toned cream based contour stick as it melts into the skin to give a more natural appearance. After blending any harsh edges with a beauty blender or foundation brush, I set the cream contour in place with a slightly warmer toned bronzing powder. - Sunset blush
The most popular makeup trend online that seems to be universally popular this summer is blusher. Shades of orange, ‘peach fuzz’ a light coral toned shade, and baby doll pinks applied in a soft gradient on the apples of the cheeks and blended along the cheekbones to create an orange/ pink gradient.
Multi-purpose cream colour sticks in orange, terracotta and pink that can be used on the lips, eyes and cheeks, and airy liquid blushers will be a handbag staple this summer.
- Wet Look highlighting
The full faced glossy/ skin glow look of last summer has been replaced with highlighting only where necessary and where the sun would naturally highlight your face. Liquid highlighters or highlighting balms worn on its own, or layered underneath tinted and holographic powder highlighters to give the ultimate glow on the high points of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, cupids bow, and inner corners of the eyes. - Glossy Lips
Tinted lip oils and glossy lipstick balms were very popular on the runways and online. Worn alone or with a brown, honey, or pinkish toned lipliner, it gives the lips a modern 90’s edge. Soft matte neutral lips will still be popular, but tinted glossy lips will reign supreme this summer.
. - Clean and Natural Brows
Over filled dark brows are out, and full, shaped natural brows are in. Keep them neat and tidy this summer by brushing them upwards and slightly outwards with a clear or tinted eye brow gel to create a natural brow lift effect. - Monochromatic
Single toned colour palletes have become increasing popular with online viral trends such as the ‘strawberry and cherry girl’ makeup looks. Dewy, light berry tones are used on the the eyes, lips and cheeks to create a healthy flushed look. 1 colour mood with a shift in tonal opacity between the lips and the face are the trend this summer. The 90’s monochromatic colour pallete trend of neutral shades such as taupes and earthy matte tones will also remain popular throughout this summer. - Pop of colour
With the minimal makeup trend taking over this summer, colour mascara or eyeliner are a great way to emphasize your eyes, and particularly a fun look to try while on your summer vacation. Blue toned mascara or eyeliner would look great on brown or blue eyes and violet shades would make green and hazel eyes pop.
